Before each use, a competent person visually checks for bent, cracked, or elongated links, surface wear, corrosion, heat discoloration, and damaged or illegible identification tags. Hooks and master links are included in every inspection - damage to a fitting can fail the assembly the same as a damaged link. When anything looks questionable, the sling comes out of service for evaluation against the manufacturer's published criteria.
The primary difference is strength-to-weight ratio. Grade 100 alloy steel offers approximately 25% more working load limit than Grade 80 at the same chain diameter. In practice, a Grade 100 chain sling assembly can be lighter and more manageable than an equivalent-capacity Grade 80 configuration. All Holloway Houston manufactured chain slings use Grade 100 alloy steel, with fittings sourced from Crosby, Carcano, and Yoke.
Chain sling tags identify the manufacturer, chain size, grade, number of legs, the sling's reach from bearing point to bearing point, and the assembly's working load limit. The three-letter configuration code - such as DOS or TOS - on the tag or product label tells you how many legs the sling has, the upper fitting type, and the hook style on each leg. A missing or illegible tag means the sling's rating and configuration cannot be confirmed without a return to the manufacturer.
