Holloway Houston carries four sling types - chain, wire rope, round, and web. Each has a distinct set of characteristics that makes it the go-to choice for specific load types, environments, and hardware configurations. Overview information for each type is below. Each sling type also has a dedicated page with product-specific detail, configurations, and stocking information.See the full Rigging And Lifting Slings hub.
Alloy steel chain slings are the choice when the job involves sharp edges, abrasive load surfaces, high heat at the contact point, or outdoor storage where a synthetic sling would degrade over time. The steel links conform to irregular load shapes, and the sling can be stored outdoors without the UV degradation concern that comes with synthetic materials. Chain slings are available in single-leg, double-leg, triple-leg, and quad-leg configurations with a variety of hook and master link hardware combinations. Shop Chain Slings
Wire rope slings are the standard in heavy-lift rigging where a steel sling body and high strength-to-weight ratio matter. Eyes can be flemish-pressed or hand-tucked, and thimbled or bare depending on the hardware connection. Wire rope slings are commonly found on construction cranes, marine deck rigging, and oil field lifting operations where the load, the angles, and the hardware demand a steel sling body. Round slings are synthetic slings where the load-bearing fibers run in a continuous loop inside a polyester jacket. The jacket protects the fibers and the load surface protects itself from concentrated stress at sling contact points - round slings distribute load across a wider contact area than wire rope or chain. Holloway Houston manufactures round slings in-house. If you need a custom length or a sling made to a specific project spec, our manufacturing facility can produce it. Shop Round Slings
Web slings are flat polyester or nylon straps, wide at the load contact point, and the most common choice for general material handling where surface protection matters and load weight is within the synthetic range. Web slings are lighter than chain or wire rope slings of comparable working load limit (WLL), which makes them easier to handle on high-volume pick-and-place work. Holloway Houston manufactures web slings in our Houston facility. Shop Web Slings
Ratings and examples here are for safety awareness. Final gear selection for any specific lift belongs with the qualified rigger or engineer responsible for the work.
Riggers typically look at several factors when specifying a sling for a job: the nature of the load surface (is it sharp, hot, or chemically active?), the load geometry (flat, round, irregular?), the environment where the sling will be stored and used, the connection hardware at the crane hook and the load, and how frequently the sling will see service. Chain handles heat and abrasion where synthetics cannot. Round slings go around irregularly shaped loads without a concentrated bite at the contact edge. Web slings work well on finished surfaces where a wide, flat contact point reduces marking risk. Wire rope slings cover heavy structural and marine lifts where steel-to-steel connection is standard practice.
Industry standards published under ASME B30.9 (Slings) address sling design, marking, inspection, and removal from service across chain, wire rope, and synthetic sling types. WSTDA standards WS-1 and RS-1 apply specifically to web slings and round slings, respectively. Manufacturer documentation for any specific sling model provides the WLL for the configuration and any relevant use considerations.
Chain, wire rope, round, or web - Holloway Houston stocks slings in Houston and manufactures round slings and web slings in-house. Our rigging specialists can confirm working load limit, configuration, and lead time before you order.
Holloway Houston manufactures round slings and web slings in our Houston facility - these are Holloway Houston-manufactured products. For chain slings and wire rope slings, we stock slings from established manufacturers in the rigging industry. The brand list below reflects current stocking and is structured to accommodate additional lines as our catalog grows.

Slings are inspected before each use and at regular intervals by a qualified person. ASME B30.9 addresses inspection requirements across sling types, covering what to look for and criteria for removal from service. Inspection programs typically look for deformation, cuts, wear, broken wires or links, heat or chemical damage, UV degradation on synthetic slings, and any condition that affects the sling's ability to perform its rated function. Slings with illegible or missing identification tags are removed from service until the information can be verified from the manufacturer's documentation.
Holloway Houston offers rigging inspection services for slings and associated rigging hardware. If your operation involves periodic rigging inspection or you need slings examined before returning them to service, contact our team to discuss what's involved.
Holloway Houston has been in the rigging and lifting business since 1960 - over 65 years. The company is ISO 9001 certified, employs 250+ people across our Houston operations, and serves industrial, construction, oil and gas, and marine customers nationally.
For slings specifically, Holloway Houston is both a manufacturer and a distributor. Round slings and web slings come off our own production floor in Houston. Chain slings and wire rope slings come from stocking inventory supplied by manufacturers whose products we have carried for years. The combination means we can fill an order from shelf stock or build to spec depending on what the job needs.
Same-day pickup is available from our Houston warehouse. Orders shipping nationally typically leave the same day or next day for in-stock items. Volume pricing is available for B2B accounts.
Rigging slings across all types fall under the scope of ASME B30.9 (Slings), which addresses design, marking, care, use, inspection, and removal from service. Synthetic slings - web and round - also fall under the scope of WSTDA standards: WS-1 for web slings and RS-1 for round slings. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.184 applies to slings used in general industry, and 29 CFR 1926.251 applies to rigging on construction sites.
Slings manufactured to these standards carry identification markings - including the working load limit for each rated configuration - that stay with the sling throughout its service life. A sling with an unreadable or missing ID tag is not in service-ready condition.
Rigging slings are load-bearing components. Proper selection, inspection, and use call for training consistent with ASME B30.9 (Slings) and applicable OSHA standards including 29 CFR 1910.184 and 29 CFR 1926.251.
