Wire Rope & Cable Strand Terminations

A wire rope is only as strong as its termination. Whether you are using a Flemish Eye splice, a swaged sleeve, or a simple clip turnback, the hardware at the end of the rope must be able to withstand the full force of the load without slipping or deforming.

Holloway Houston Inc. offers a complete range of industrial-grade terminations. Our inventory features the most trusted names in rigging, including Crosby and Green Pin, ensuring that every thimble, clip, and ferrule meets rigorous performance specifications.

The Termination Ecosystem

1. Wire Rope Clips (The "U-Bolt")

The most common method for field-terminating wire rope.

  • Crosby G-450 (Red-U-Bolt®) : The industry standard. The Red-U-Bolt® is drop-forged and hot-dip galvanized. It is the only clip that provides a Termination Efficiency Rating of 80-90% (depending on size) when installed correctly.
  • Fist Grip® Clips (G-429) : Also known as "Double Saddle" clips. These are easier to install than U-bolts because they cannot be installed backward (no "saddle on the live end" rule). They are ideal for applications where the rope clips are frequently moved or adjusted.
  • Application : Used for turnback eyes on winch lines, guy wires, and temporary lifting slings.

2. Wire Rope Sleeves (Ferrules)

For permanent, high-efficiency terminations.

  • Cold Swage Sleeves : Designed to be compressed (swaged) over the wire rope using a hydraulic press. This creates a "Cold Tuff" bond that is often stronger than the rope itself.
  • Materials : We stock Carbon Steel sleeves (S-505) for general lifting and Aluminum/Copper options for specific environmental needs.
  • Efficiency : When properly swaged, these sleeves provide 95-100% termination efficiency.

3. Wire Rope Thimbles

Protect your rope from wear.

  • Standard & Heavy Duty (G-411/G-414) : Thimbles are inserted into the eye of the loop to prevent the wire rope from being crushed or kinked by the shackle pin or crane hook.
  • Application : Essential for any wire rope sling that will be used for overhead lifting. A thimble maintains the proper D/d ratio in the eye, preventing fatigue failure.

4. Spelter Socketing Compounds

For the ultimate permanent connection.

  • Wireshield / Wirelock : We stock Socketing Kits ranging from 100cc to 2000cc. These resin compounds are poured into a spelter socket to bond the "broomed out" wire rope strands inside the socket cone.
  • Benefit : Provides 100% termination efficiency (the rope will break before the socket pulls out). It cures in minutes and requires no heat (unlike molten zinc).

Installation Safety: The "Right Way"

Improper termination is a leading cause of rigging accidents.

  • Clips : Remember the rule: "Never Saddle a Dead Horse." The saddle of the clip must always sit on the live (load-bearing) end of the rope, while the U-bolt sits on the dead (cut) end. Installing them backward reduces efficiency by up to 40%.
  • Torque : Wire rope clips must be torqued to the manufacturer's recommended value using a torque wrench. They should be re-tightened after the first load is applied.
  • Turnback : Ensure you have the correct amount of "turnback" (tail length) and the correct number of clips for the rope diameter (e.g., a 1/2" rope requires 3 clips).
