Rigging is a very important process in most of the businesses today, especially construction and shipyard industries. Rigging can be referred to any hardware and / or equipment that the businesses use to attach heavy objects to the device that will lift it. It is also defined as the process or an art to hook the load or the heavy object to the lifting device by using the most durable slings and other required hardware / equipment.
Since the process of rigging involves lifting of heavy weight objects, the amount of risk that exists in this process is high too. Industry standards and OSHA guidance generally call for rigging equipment to be inspected before each shift by the operator or a qualified person. Published guidance from OSHA , including 1910.184 for general industry and 1926.251 for construction , establishes pre-use inspection as a standard requirement. Periodic inspection at defined intervals by a qualified person supplements the pre-use check, with frequency based on equipment type and service conditions.
OSHA rigging requirements are split across general industry and construction standards. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.184 covers sling inspection, identification, load ratings, and removal from service for general industry. OSHA 29 CFR 1926.251 covers the same categories for construction sites. Both require rigging equipment to be inspected before each use and prohibit the use of equipment in a damaged or defective condition. The applicable standard depends on the work sector.
Overloaded or mismatched equipment, defective gear placed into service without inspection, and improperly secured attachment points account for a significant portion of rigging incidents. Published rigging requirements address all three: equipment rated for the load and connection geometry, pre-use inspection before every shift, and documented procedures for removing defective hardware from service , all of which are addressed under OSHA 1910.184 and 1926.251.
Under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1404 and 1926.1425, employers are responsible for deploying only qualified riggers on assembly, disassembly, and load-handling tasks during crane operations. A qualified rigger combines a recognized degree or certificate in rigging with hands-on experience matched to the specific load and equipment involved. OSHA is explicit that qualification is not transferable across significantly different load types or rigging configurations.
