Every sling wears fastest where it contacts the load. Sharp steel edges, rough concrete, corroded pipe, and bolt heads the contact point is where a sling loses service life. The Rhino Guard chafe sleeve sits between the sling and the surface, absorbing abrasion so the load-bearing fiber does not.
Holloway Houston manufactures the Rhino Guard from HMPE (high-modulus polyethylene) the same fiber family used in high-performance synthetic lifting slings and soft shackles. HMPE provides cut and abrasion resistance that polyester and Cordura sleeves cannot match at the same sleeve thickness. The fiber is UV-resistant and unaffected by water exposure, making the Rhino Guard suitable for outdoor, marine, and wet-environment rigging.

Round Slings and Wire Rope
Tube sleeves slide over round slings and wire rope assemblies, surrounding the full sling circumference at the contact zone. The tube protects against cutting and abrasion on all sides of the sling body the standard protection method for round sling basket hitches over structural steel, pipe, and equipment with edge conditions. Also used on wire rope where the rope wraps over a surface or passes through a fairlead.
Web Slings and Chain
Flat wraps lay over the bearing surface of web slings and wrap around chain links at abrasion points. The flat profile covers the face of a web sling where it contacts a load edge, and wraps around chain links where they seat against steel or concrete. Flat wraps are the standard selection where a tube sleeve cannot be threaded onto the sling assembly.

High-modulus polyethylene fiber braided into a sleeve. Provides the highest cut and abrasion resistance of the three options. UV-resistant and unaffected by water or moisture. The standard selection where contact surfaces are sharp-edged steel, abrasive concrete, or rough pipe, and where sleeve service life under repeated use is the priority.

High-tenacity nylon fabric sleeve. More abrasion-resistant than standard polyester. The common selection for general rigging where moderate wear is expected and HMPE-level cut resistance is not required.

Standard synthetic sleeve for light-duty and general-purpose protection. Suitable for applications where the contact surface is smooth and sleeve replacement frequency is not a concern.
Chafe sleeves are protective accessories, not load-bearing rigging components. The following standards govern the slings that the Rhino Guard is used with not the sleeve itself:

Slings: covers inspection, use, and removal-from-service criteria for synthetic, wire rope, and chain slings. Inspection at the contact zone where chafe sleeves are placed is addressed in the removal-from-service sections.

Rigging Hardware: covers hardware used with sling assemblies. Referenced where shackles and master links connect to sling assemblies protected by chafe sleeves.

Slings: federal regulation covering sling inspection, rated capacity, and removal criteria in general industry. Applies to the slings the Rhino Guard protects; does not govern the sleeve itself.

Rigging Equipment for Material Handling: applies in construction environments where slings and chafe protection are used during lifts.

Standard Specification for High Modulus Polyethylene (HMPE) Fiber: the material standard for HMPE fiber used in high-performance synthetic products including the Rhino Guard sleeve construction.
No fixed inspection interval applies to chafe sleeves. Visual inspection is commonly performed alongside routine sling inspection before each use or at each shift change where slings are in continuous service.
Chafe sleeves are consumable protective components they wear so the sling does not. When the sleeve shows damage as above, it is replaced. Repair of damaged sleeves is not recommended. The sling underneath is inspected per ASME B30.9 or the applicable standard before returning to service.

Cuts or abrasion through to the inner sleeve surface

Significant fiber loss or thinning at the contact zone

Sleeve displacement exposing the sling at the contact point

UV degradation or stiffening of sleeve material

Any condition that prevents the sleeve from staying positioned at the intended protection point
Rhino Guard chafe sleeves are protective accessories and are not load-bearing components. They do not change sling Working Load Limits, rated capacities, or inspection requirements. Sling inspection per ASME B30.9 and OSHA 1910.184 applies regardless of sleeve condition. Always confirm sling fitness for service using the applicable standard before each use.
Rhino Guard chafe sleeves are used wherever slings contact surfaces that cause abrasion or cutting damage at the load point:

Rhino Guard chafe sleeves are manufactured in Houston by Holloway Houston for use with synthetic slings, wire rope, and chain in rigging and lifting applications.
Sleeves are produced internally to maintain consistency across materials, construction, and finished dimensions.
HMPE (Rhino Guard), Cordura, and polyester to match the protection level to the application.
Tube diameters and flat wrap widths outside the standard range are available on request.
Original specifications are retained to support accurate replacement orders.
The Rhino Guard is manufactured from HMPE (high-modulus polyethylene) fiber the same material family used in high-performance synthetic slings and soft shackles. HMPE provides superior cut and abrasion resistance compared to polyester or Cordura at the same sleeve thickness. Holloway Houston also offers polyester and Cordura chafe sleeves for applications where HMPE-level protection is not required.
Tube sleeves surround the full circumference of a round sling or wire rope the standard choice where the contact point can shift around the sling body during the lift. Flat wraps cover one face of the sling the standard choice for web slings where the flat bearing surface is the wear zone, and for chain at contact points where a tube sleeve cannot be installed.
No. A chafe sleeve is a non-load-bearing protective component. It sits between the sling and the contact surface and does not change the sling’s published WLL. The sleeve protects the sling from abrasion damage that would otherwise reduce service life and trigger earlier removal from service at inspection.
Service life depends on the abrasiveness of the contact surface, frequency of use, and load conditions at the contact point. HMPE outlasts polyester and Cordura sleeves in cut-and-abrasion applications, but all chafe sleeves are consumable they wear so the sling does not. Replace when cuts reach the inner surface or significant fiber loss is observed.
ASME B30.9 covers removal-from-service criteria for synthetic and wire rope slings, including inspection at the contact and bearing zones. OSHA 1910.184 applies in general industry environments. The sling is inspected per these standards regardless of whether a chafe sleeve is in place.
