Available in multiple widths, plies, and hitch configurations (vertical, choker, basket), these slings are designed to distribute load evenly, minimizing point loading and reducing damage to delicate or finished surfaces.

Working Load Limits (WLL) and hitch capacities are established by Holloway Houston and displayed on each sling’s permanent identification tag. Sling performance is affected by sling angle, hitch geometry, D/d around hardware, and environmental conditions, emphasizing the importance of qualified selection and inspection.

Design of Flat Web Slings

Flat web slings are constructed from high-strength synthetic fibers and feature reinforced stitching to form eye loops or end fittings. They are available in flat, tubular, or endless designs and in various widths and lengths to meet different lifting requirements. The woven construction provides strength, flexibility, and minimal stretch, while the flat surface protects delicate loads. Each sling carries a permanent ID tag detailing material, configuration, and rated WLL for vertical, choker, and basket hitches.

Materials Used in Flat Web Slings

Synthetic flat web slings are primarily manufactured using nylon or polyester fibers. Each material offers different performance characteristics that affect elongation, flexibility, and environmental compatibility.

Nylon Web Slings

Nylon slings typically exhibit approximately 8–10% elongation at the rated load, which can help absorb shock but may introduce additional movement during lifting. Nylon generally resists alkalis but is not recommended for use with acids or bleach.

It absorbs moisture, which can increase elongation during a lift. Typical manufacturer-specified service temperature limits fall within the 180–200°F range. The sling's identification tag governs actual limits for each unit.

Polyester Web Slings

Polyester slings typically exhibit lower stretch at around 3% at rated load, providing better load control and stability during lifting operations. Polyester generally resists acids and bleach but is not recommended for strong alkalis at elevated temperatures. It absorbs very little moisture and remains non-conductive when dry. Like nylon, the typical service temperature range is around 194–200°F, but the tag governs actual limits.

Material Awareness

Both nylon and polyester slings can be weakened by sharp edges, excessive abrasion, high heat, ultraviolet (UV) exposure, and incompatible chemicals. Proper edge protection and environmental evaluation are required in all lifting applications.

Understanding Working Load Limits (WLL) Capacity Awareness

The Working Load Limit (WLL) is the maximum load a sling is rated to carry under normal service conditions. This value is always lower than the breaking strength and is established using a minimum 5:1 design factor in accordance with WSTDA and ASME guidance.

Sling angles are measured from the horizontal, not the vertical. This is critical for proper rigging calculations.
As the angle decreases, the force on each leg increases and the effective capacity decreases. Angles below 30° from horizontal are not recommended without engineering approval.

The sling is attached straight up and down between the load and the hook. This is the baseline condition for rated WLL.

Choker Hitch

The sling is wrapped around the load and passed through its own eye. Typical efficiency is around 80% of the vertical rating, depending on choke angle and load shape. Localized stress occurs at the choke point.

The sling supports the load in a U-shape. When both legs are vertical, the capacity can approach 2x the vertical rating. As the sling legs spread, the actual capacity reduces based on the angle from horizontal.

Synthetic Flat Web Sling Inspection & Tagging

Synthetic flat web slings must be inspected at receipt, before each use, and periodically by a qualified person following OSHA 1910.184 and ASME B30.9. Users should check the sling body, eyes, and stitching for any damage that may reduce load capacity or compromise safety. Only Holloway Houston or authorized facilities may repair or re-tag slings. Unauthorized repairs or modifications are strictly prohibited as they can significantly reduce strength and safety.

Why are sling angles measured from horizontal?

Because it reflects the actual tension in each sling leg. As the sling approaches horizontal, the force increases. Measuring this way prevents miscalculation.

Are synthetic slings electrically safe?
