3 Leg Wire Rope Bridle Slings

Holloway Houston 3 Leg Wire Rope Bridle Slings

For lifting applications that require balanced support and controlled load distribution, 3 Leg wire rope bridle slings provide dependable performance. Also known as triple leg wire rope slings or 3 Leg bridle configurations, these assemblies are designed for lifting uneven or multi-point loads such as fabricated structures, machinery, and equipment with offset lifting points.

What Is a 3 Leg Wire Rope Bridle Sling?

A 3 Leg wire rope bridle sling consists of three identical lengths of wire rope connected to a single master link or ring at the top. Each leg is fitted with an end termination, such as hooks, shackles, or thimbles to attach to multiple lifting points. This configuration distributes the load evenly across all legs, providing improved balance, control, and lifting efficiency, especially when working with irregularly shaped or unevenly weighted loads.

Key Features
  • Three equal wire rope legs joined to a central master link.
  • Wide selection of hooks, shackles, or thimbles for connection.
  • Custom lengths, diameters, and hardware configurations.
  • Proof-tested and certified to meet ASME and OSHA standards.

Design and Materials

Holloway Houston's 3 Leg Wire Rope Bridle Slings are designed from Extra Improved Plow Steel (EIPS) wire rope with Independent Wire Rope Core (IWRC). EIPS provides higher tensile strength than standard wire rope grades, while IWRC manufacture resists crushing and maintains structural integrity under load. Each sling is manufactured with full internal lubrication to reduce friction and extend rope service life.

Design-icon-1

Wire Rope Grade & Type

  • Design-icon-2 Each 3 Leg Wire Rope Bridle Sling is built using two of the most trusted wire rope materials for lifting performance EIPS and IWRC.
  • Design-icon-2 EIPS (Extra Improved Plowed Steel) wire provides superior tensile strength and wear resistance, handling higher loads while maintaining flexibility and smooth rope movement.
  • Design-icon-2 IWRC (Independent Wire Rope Core) prevents flattening under tension by providing internal support, providing the sling remains stable and uniform during heavy, extended use.
Design-icon-1

Configurations

  • Design-icon-2 Holloway Houston manufactures 3 Leg wire rope bridle slings in two configurations designed to match lifting requirements and application configurations.
  • Design-icon-2 6x19 Wire Rope :  Used for general lifting tasks, it provides strong abrasion resistance and balanced flexibility, making it practical for standard applications.
  • Design-icon-2 6x36 Wire Rope : Preferred when greater flexibility is required, it helps minimize wear during frequent or complex lifting movements.
  • Design-icon-2 Quality : Preferred when greater flexibility is required, it helps minimize wear during frequent or complex lifting movements.
Design-icon-1

End Terminations

  • Design-icon-2 Each wire rope sling is finished with high-quality terminations that maintain strength and protect the wire structure during lifts.
  • Design-icon-2 Flemish Eye with Steel Thimble : This termination provides a reinforced splice that reduces friction and prevents wear at contact points. The steel thimble maintains eye shape stability, protecting the rope from sharp edges or deformation.
  • Design-icon-2 Hooks and Shackles : Available in eye, swivel, and self-locking configurations to suit various rigging requirements. Bolt-type shackles and screw-pin shackles provide different connection options when used with thimble-eye terminations, offering flexibility in rigging configurations.

Advantages of 3 Leg Wire Rope Bridle Slings

  • Design-icon-2 3 Leg wire rope bridle slings distribute lifting forces evenly across three connection points, reducing stress on individual attachments and improving overall load balance.
  • Design-icon-2 This configuration helps maintain proper alignment during lifting and provides steadier handling compared to single-leg arrangements. They are commonly used for lifting machinery, fabricated components, and equipment with multiple attachment lugs or offset centers of gravity.
  • Design-icon-2 The 3 leg setup keeps the load stable and minimizes side movement when lifting from uneven or angled points. Holloway Houston supplies 3 Leg bridle slings with equal or customized leg lengths to suit both uniform and irregular lifting conditions.
  • Design-icon-2 Each sling is designed to meet ASME B30.9 and OSHA requirements for performance and safety. For heavier lifts or applications needing more balance and control, 4 Leg bridle slings are also available, distributing the weight evenly across four lifting points.

Compliance and Proof Testing

Each sling is manufactured in accordance with ASME B30.9 and OSHA 1910.184 standards. Every sling is proof-tested to 2 times its rated working load limit and provided with identification tags showing rated capacities, sling angle limitations, and test documentation. Inspection and certification records are included with every order.

Safety-Inspection Safety-Inspection

Selecting the Right Sling

Proper sling selection requires evaluation of load characteristics, rigging geometry, and environmental conditions. Consider the following before each lift :

  • Load weight, center of gravity, and number of available pick points.
  • Required sling capacity at planned rigging angles (capacity decreases as angles increase).
  • Compliance with ASME B30.9 rigging requirements and site-specific lifting procedures.
  • Environmental exposure (marine, offshore, corrosive, or high-temperature conditions).
  • Termination compatibility with existing rigging hardware (hooks, shackles, master links).

Safety, Inspection, and Maintenance

Routine inspection and proper handling extend service life and maintain safe lifting performance. Follow ASME B30.9 inspection requirements before each use.

Handling Guidelines :

  • Inspect for broken wires, kinks, corrosion, wear, or deformation before every lift.
  • Use corner protection or softeners to prevent contact with sharp edges.
  • Avoid exposure to chemicals, excessive heat, or abrasive surfaces
  • Maintain sling angles of 30° or greater from horizontal (capacity reduces sharply below 30°).
  • Remove from service any sling showing damage per ASME B30.9 removal criteria.
  • Store in a clean, dry area away from floor contact and direct exposure.

For personnel performing inspections or lifts, Holloway Houston recommends rigging safety and sling inspection training to maintain compliance with current ASME and OSHA standards.

Capacity, Angles, and Selection

The lifting capacity of a 3 Leg wire rope bridle sling depends on sling diameter, leg angle, and hardware configuration.

Example Capacity Table (Per Leg):

Diameter (inches) 30° Cap (tons) 45° Cap (tons) 60° Cap (tons)
1/4 0.95 1.35 1.6
1/2 3.8 5.4 6.6
1 14.5 20.5 25
Note : Sling angles are measured from horizontal. Higher angles from horizontal result in higher capacity per leg. Capacity decreases significantly below 30°. Always verify sling angles and load distribution before lifting.
How Sling Length Is Measured :

Sling length equals leg length from the bearing surface of the master link to the bearing surface of the end fitting. Master link dimensions are not included in leg length measurement.

Key addition: Clearly stating "from horizontal" prevents any confusion about angle measurement conventions.
