Web Sling Types

Web slings are defined by their eye configuration - how the ends are finished determines which hitches the sling accommodates and how it seats against a hook or fixture. Holloway Houston manufactures the three configurations most commonly found in industrial lifting.

Eye-and-Eye Web Slings

Eye-and-eye web slings have a flat loop eye at each end. Both eyes lie in the same plane as the body of the sling. This is the most common web sling configuration and the most flexible: it runs in vertical, choker, or basket hitch without modification. The flat eye seats cleanly on a hook and presents a wide face against the load in basket. Eye-and-eye web slings are the standard starting point for general lifting and rigging work across most industries.

Twisted-Eye (Turned-Eye) Web Slings

Twisted-eye web slings, sometimes called turned-eye web slings, have the eye rotated 90 degrees from the body plane - so the eye lies flat when the sling hangs vertically from a hook. In a straight vertical hitch, the turned eye sits flush against the hook's saddle and keeps the body of the sling from folding or twisting at the attachment point. This configuration is common where riggers are running repeated vertical hitches and want the sling to hang cleanly without manual alignment of the eye each time.

Endless (Grommet) Web Slings

Endless web slings are a continuous loop of flat webbing with no separate eye - the webbing forms a closed ring. Endless web slings are used in basket hitch where the loop runs around the load and both sides share the body of the sling. They distribute load contact over more of the sling length than an eye-and-eye basket, making them a common fit for pipe bundles, structural shapes, and loads where even contact distribution across the contact surface matters.

Endless (Grommet) Web Slings (Type 5)

Endless web slings are a continuous loop of flat webbing with no separate eye - the webbing forms a closed ring. Endless web slings are used in basket hitch where the loop runs around the load and both sides share the body of the sling. Because there are no fixed eyes, the wear points can be rotated around the loop over the life of the sling. They distribute load contact over more of the sling length than an eye-and-eye basket, making them a common fit for pipe bundles, structural shapes, and loads where even contact distribution across the contact surface matters. Web Sling Materials

The webbing material determines how the sling behaves in the presence of chemicals, moisture, heat, and UV exposure. Two materials cover the majority of industrial web sling applications.

Polyester Web Slings

Polyester is the standard material for web slings across most industrial applications. Polyester webbing is color-coded by WLL range per WSTDA WS-1 industry convention - the color on the sling tag and body corresponds to its assigned working load limit range, not to a specific single capacity. Polyester web slings are generally associated with better performance in acidic environments compared to nylon, and they show lower elongation at working load than nylon webbing. Nylon Web Slings

Nylon webbing is typically associated with applications where alkaline exposure is a concern - nylon generally performs better in alkaline chemical environments where polyester may be less suited. Nylon web slings elongate more at working load than polyester, which can be a consideration where load movement during the lift is a factor. Where Web Slings Are Used

The flat body of a web sling is what sets it apart in the field. A round sling's tubular core contacts the load along a curved line of circumference. A web sling's flat face contacts the load across the full width of the webbing - and that wider footprint changes the pressure distribution on the load surface. This is why web slings are a common first choice for glass panels, finished steel, painted surfaces, and automotive body components, where the sling's contact mark matters.
