Soft Shackles for Off-Road Recovery and Rigging

A soft shackle is a synthetic loop connector that functions as a shackle, it connects winch lines to tree savers, pulls loops to anchor eyes, and hooks into recovery points the same way a steel shackle does. The difference is material and weight: a soft shackle is braided synthetic rope formed into a loop with a button-knot closure, not forged steel with a threaded pin.

In a recovery setup, the soft shackle appears at every connection point: from the tree saver eyes to the winch line loop, from the recovery point to the tow line, from the extension line to the main line. It is the lowest-profile, lightest connection hardware in the kit.

Holloway Houston builds the HHIppo Link soft shackle series at our Houston facility. Every HHIppo Link is load-tested on Holloway Houston's own test beds to verify the MBS rating before it ships. The braided polyester jacket with Fiber Lock coating covers the HMPE load core and protects against abrasion at the contact points. The button-knot closure seats in the loop eye and opens without tools, important when conditions are cold, wet, or both.

The Holloway Houston soft shackle catalog totals 48 SKUs: 44 HHIppo Link SKUs across three sizes and 15+ colors, plus 4 imported soft shackle SKUs in four sizes for value-tier applications.

Brands We Carry

Holloway Houston manufactures the HHIppo Link soft shackle line. The HHIppo Link is built, tested, and shipped from Houston, not a rebadged import but an Holloway Houston-designed and Holloway Houston-tested product. Every HHIppo Link unit goes through load testing on Holloway Houston's own test beds before it leaves the facility.

Holloway Houston also stocks imported soft shackles under the "Holloway Imported" designation. These are positioned as value-tier options at lower price points. Both lines carry the same WLL and MBS rating structure at the same sizes.

As Holloway Houston develops the HHIppo Link line, additional sizes and configurations will be added. The current three-size HHIppo Link catalog covers the WLL range from 5,800 to 9,400 lbs that most off-road recovery and rigging applications require.

Soft Shackle Applications

  • Winch Line to Tree Saver Connection : Connecting the loop end of the synthetic winch line to the eyes of the tree saver strap. The soft shackle is the standard hardware for this connection, lower profile than a D-shackle and no metal mass at the connection point.
  • Recovery Point to Tow Line : Attaching a recovery strap or tow line to a vehicle's recovery point, hitch shackle mount, or tow hook when a steel shackle's pin is not needed.
  • Vehicle-to-Vehicle Recovery : Inline connection between two recovery lines or between a recovery line and the stricken vehicle's attachment point.
  • High-Visibility Rigging : The 15+ color options on the HHIppo Link line serve dual purpose: color coding connection hardware within a recovery kit and using high-visibility colors (Blaze Orange, Saturn Yellow, Fusion Red) that are easy to spot in dim light, mud, or snow.
  • Industrial and Rigging Applications : Holloway Houston markets the HHIppo Link for industrial rigging applications where a lightweight, non-sparking, non-conductive connector provides advantages over steel shackle hardware.
  • Marine and Water Operations : Soft shackles do not corrode and float on water. Connection hardware in marine recovery and water operations where metal shackle corrosion is a maintenance concern.
  • Competition Off-Road : Used in organized off-road competition where fast setup and teardown of recovery hardware is expected. The button-knot opens and closes without tools.
  • Fleet and Commercial Recovery : Professional recovery operators who carry multiple soft shackles in a kit use the HHIppo Link color system to differentiate shackles by WLL rating in the field.

Why Holloway Houston for Soft Shackles

Holloway Houston builds the HHIppo Link. That matters because every HHIppo Link soft shackle is load-tested on Holloway Houston's own test beds before it ships, not spot-tested from a production batch, but verified as part of our production process. The WLL of 8,700 lbs on a 3/8-inch HHIppo Link is backed by a 43,500-lb MBS test result from our facility, not a manufacturer's data sheet we are passing along.

The HHIppo Link's HMPE core with braided polyester jacket and Fiber Lock coating gives it abrasion protection at the contact points, the areas that take wear from hook throats, recovery eyes, and repeated open-and-close cycles. The button-knot closure seats positively and does not require tools to operate, which is the design standard for recovery hardware that sees use in conditions where fingers are cold and wet.

Over 65 years in industrial rigging and lifting, ISO 9001 certification, and in-house test beds, Holloway Houston applies the same quality discipline to the HHIppo Link that we apply to the industrial slings and rigging hardware in our main product catalog.

How to Select the Right Soft Shackle

Selecting a soft shackle for a recovery kit involves three variables: the WLL required, the size that fits the connection point, and whether color matters for identification or visibility.

WLL: Match the soft shackle's WLL to the load demand at the connection point. In a recovery system, the soft shackle connects components that each carry their own rated loads, the shackle WLL is the reference for the connection point itself. The 8,700-lb WLL on the 3/8-inch HHIppo Link is a common selection for setups paired with mid-range synthetic winch lines and tree saver straps in the 9,000 to 11,000-lb WLL range.

Size: Working length (10 inches on most sizes) determines how the shackle sits in the connection. Diameter (5/16, 3/8, or 7/16 inch) affects the throat opening, relevant when the shackle is threading through a loop end or around a narrow attachment point. Verification that the shackle's body diameter fits the throat of the connecting loop or eye is part of proper sizing.

Color Selection: If color coding a recovery kit by capacity or function, the HHIppo Link's 15+ color range covers the common coding conventions used in organized off-road and competition recovery. High-visibility colors (Blaze Orange, Saturn Yellow, Fusion Red) are useful in low-light or dirty field conditions. Holloway Houston Green is the standard Holloway house color.

HHIppo Link vs. Imported: Both lines carry the same WLL/MBS ratings at equivalent sizes. The HHIppo Link adds individual load testing at Holloway Houston's facility, the Fiber Lock jacket coating, and color selection. The imported line is the value-tier option at lower price points for buyers whose primary concern is WLL at the lowest cost per shackle.

Soft Shackle Safety and Awareness

  • The button-knot closure on a soft shackle is what keeps the loop from opening under load. The knot seats in the loop's eye, the eye captures the knot and holds the shackle closed as long as the loop is under tension. A properly seated button-knot is verified before any pull. An improperly seated knot can pull through under load.
  • WLL is the soft shackle's rated working load. MBS is the tested failure load. The 5:1 design factor between MBS and WLL on both the HHIppo Link and imported lines is consistent with Cordage Institute (CI) practices for synthetic hardware. The WLL is the field operating limit, not the MBS.
  • Visual inspection of soft shackles before each use is standard practice. Signs of concern include cuts or abrasion through the jacket into the core, damaged or frayed button-knot sections, loop deformation, and UV bleaching or fiber brittleness from sun exposure. A soft shackle with visible core damage is removed from service.
  • Soft shackles are not directional in the same sense as steel shackles, there is no pin that needs to be moused or tightened. The closure is the button-knot. After the knot is seated in the eye and the loop is under tension, the shackle is loaded.
  • Temperature affects synthetic rope performance. Extreme cold stiffens the material and may affect how the button-knot seats and releases. Extreme heat from friction (during a high-tension pull with rope-on-rope contact at the connection point) can reduce effective fiber strength at the contact zone. Manufacturer documentation for the specific product addresses temperature limits.
  • Soft shackles are not forged steel. They do not function identically in all applications where a steel shackle is used. The button-knot closure is not equivalent to a moused pin in applications where the connection point experiences persistent side-loading, vibration, or repeated unloading and reloading cycles. In those conditions, assess whether a steel shackle is more appropriate.
  • The HHIppo Link line is verified against Cordage Institute (CI) standards and load-tested on Holloway Houston's own test beds. Holloway Houston documentation for each product provides the test basis for the published MBS ratings.

Frequently Asked Questions

A soft shackle is a synthetic rope connector that functions like a steel D-shackle, it connects two load-bearing components such as a winch line loop and a tree saver strap eye. Instead of forged steel with a threaded pin, a soft shackle is a braided synthetic loop with a button-knot closure. Holloway Houston builds the HHIppo Link series with an HMPE core, braided polyester jacket, and Fiber Lock abrasion coating, in WLL ratings from 5,800 to 9,400 lbs.
The HHIppo Link line covers three sizes. The 5/16-inch x 10-inch carries WLL 5,800 lbs and MBS 29,000 lbs. The 3/8-inch x 10-inch carries WLL 8,700 lbs and MBS 43,500 lbs. The 7/16-inch x 10-inch carries WLL 9,400 lbs and MBS 47,000 lbs. All three sizes use a 5:1 design factor (MBS = 5x WLL). Every HHIppo Link is load-tested on Holloway Houston's own test beds before shipment to verify the MBS rating.
Both lines carry the same WLL and MBS ratings at equivalent sizes. The HHIppo Link is Holloway Houston's manufactured product, load-tested at Holloway Houston's facility, built with an HMPE core, braided polyester jacket, and Fiber Lock coating, and available in 15+ colors. The imported soft shackles are value-tier alternatives available in four sizes (1/4 through 7/16 inch) without the HHIppo Link's extended color range or individual test documentation.
The HHIppo Link is available in over 15 colors including Holloway Houston Green, Army Green, Baby Blue, Black, Blaze Orange, Blue, Fusion Red, Grey, Hot Pink, Midnight Blue, Orange, Purple, Red, Saturn Yellow, Tan, White, and Yellow. Color availability varies by shackle size. High-visibility options include Blaze Orange, Saturn Yellow, and Fusion Red, useful for identification in muddy, low-light, or snow conditions.
The button-knot is a formed knot at one end of the soft shackle loop. The opposite end of the loop has an eye opening. To close the shackle, the button-knot threads through the eye opening and seats against the eye face, the knot is larger than the eye opening, so it cannot pull back through when the loop is under tension. To open, the knot is pushed back through the eye by hand. No tools required. The closure holds as long as the loop is loaded; it opens easily when the load is removed.
The HHIppo Link uses an HMPE (high-modulus polyethylene) load-bearing core with a braided polyester outer jacket. The jacket is treated with Fiber Lock coating for abrasion protection at contact points where the shackle bears against hook throats, recovery eyes, or loop terminations. HMPE is the same fiber class used in high-performance synthetic winch line and rigging sling applications.
Synthetic soft shackles do not conduct electricity, which distinguishes them from steel shackle hardware in environments with electrical exposure risk. The non-conductive property of synthetic soft shackles is relevant in utility, electrical, and arborist applications where metal-to-metal contact with energized lines is a hazard. This is an awareness point, specific electrical safety requirements depend on the work environment and applicable regulations.
The HHIppo Link and imported soft shackles are designed for off-road recovery, vehicle recovery, and rigging connection applications. Holloway Houston also notes industrial rigging applications for the HHIppo Link. If soft shackles are considered for overhead lifting service, the applicable overhead lifting standards and the manufacturer's documentation for the specific product are the reference for applicability.
