Jaw-Jaw Turnbuckle Selection Considerations

Jaw-jaw turnbuckles suit applications where both ends of the assembly connect to hardware that accepts a clevis pin - lugs, tangs, pins, and bolt-through connections.

Thread Size and WLL

Thread diameter sets the capacity. The Crosby HG-228 rates at 3,500 lbs at 5/8 inch, 10,000 lbs at 1 inch, and 21,400 lbs at 1-1/2 inch. The WLL is marked on the body and jaw ends per ASME B30.26. Matching the turnbuckle WLL to the rated capacity of the assembly is the standard approach.

Take-Up Length

Take-up determines how much adjustment travel is available. The HG-228 at the 1-inch thread size comes in take-up lengths of 6, 12, 18, and 24 inches at the same 10,000-lb WLL. Longer take-up lengths accommodate more slack removal and allow more adjustment margin over the assembly's service life.

Jaw vs. Eye

Jaw ends connect via a removable pin through the jaw opening. Eye ends are closed loops that connect via shackles, hooks, or mating pins. Jaw-jaw models are the fit when both connection points are pin-type hardware. Eye-jaw configurations - produced from separate bodies and mixed end fittings - are available for assemblies where one end is pin-type and the other accepts a closed eye.

Pin Retention
