An eye-eye turnbuckle is a tension adjustment device with a closed loop (eye) on each end of the body. The eyes accept shackles, thimbles, hooks, and pins - whichever connection hardware the assembly uses. Unlike jaw configurations, the eye does not open. Once connected, the eye remains engaged until the shackle or mating hardware is removed.

Selecting an Eye-Eye Turnbuckle

Eye-eye turnbuckles suit applications where the connection hardware on both ends accepts an eye - shackles, thimbles, hooks, or fixed pins where a closed loop can be engaged.

Thread Size and WLL: The thread diameter sets the capacity. At 5/8 inch, the HG-226 rates at 3,500 lbs. At 1 inch, it is 10,000 lbs. At 1-1/2 inch, 21,400 lbs. Matching the turnbuckle WLL to the rated capacity of the assembly is the standard approach per ASME B30.26.

Take-Up Length: The take-up dimension defines how much slack the turnbuckle can remove. At the 1-inch thread size, Holloway Houston stocks 6-inch, 12-inch, 18-inch, and 24-inch take-up lengths. Longer take-up lengths provide more adjustment range for installations with significant slack or those where future adjustment may be needed.

Eye vs. Jaw: Eye ends are fixed - once the shackle or pin is in place, the eye does not open. Jaw ends open for pin insertion and removal. Eye-eye models are typically specified where the connection hardware (shackles, anchor points) is already in place and the turnbuckle is installed by passing the shackle through the eye. When one end of the assembly calls for a closed eye and the other calls for a jaw, eye-jaw turnbuckles are the standard fit.

Eye-Eye Turnbuckle Safety and Awareness

Eye-eye turnbuckles are load-bearing rigging hardware governed by ASME B30.26 and ASTM F1145 (current standard; supersedes FF-T-791b, canceled 1994). OSHA 29 CFR 1926.251 applies to rigging hardware on construction sites. The following awareness points apply:
