Holloway Houston Whip Check Slings

Whip Check Slings are hose restraint slings designed to catch a pressurized hose or fitting if it disconnects under pressure. Holloway Houston manufactures the line in 1-ply through 4-ply configurations, WLL from 7,200 lbs (1-ply) to 18,000 lbs (4-ply), in four lengths: 24, 36, 48, and 60 inches. The slings loop around the hose assembly and anchor to fixed structure, so if the connection lets go, the hose is restrained rather than becoming a projectile.

Whip Check Slings for Hose Restraint

A whip check sling, also called a hose whip restraint or air hose safety sling, loops around a hose assembly and connects to a fixed anchor point. If a hose coupling fails under pressure, the whip check limits how far the hose can travel and absorbs part of the energy of the parting connection. This is standard practice on compressed air lines, hydraulic hose assemblies, and other pressurized systems in construction sites, manufacturing, and oilfield environments.

Holloway Houston builds whip check slings in four ply ratings and four lengths, covering the range from light-duty compressed air hose on a construction site to high-WLL restraints on large-bore industrial hose assemblies.

Where Whip Check Slings Are Used

  • Compressed Air Lines - Construction sites, manufacturing plants, and maintenance shops where compressed air hose connections are at risk of accidental disconnection.

  • Hydraulic Hose Assemblies - Industrial machinery and heavy equipment where high-pressure hydraulic hose failure is a safety risk.

  • Oilfield Drilling - Mud hose, kelly hose, and high-pressure lines on drilling rigs where hose whipping is a recognized hazard.

  • Chemical and Process Plants - Pressurized hose connections in areas where hose failure would create both injury and contamination risks.

  • Sandblasting and Abrasive Blasting - High-pressure hose assemblies on abrasive blasting equipment where coupling failure is a documented hazard.

Why Holloway Houston

Holloway Houston manufactures whip check slings in Houston, Texas under ISO 9001 quality management. Four ply options and four lengths are stocked at our Houston facility, covering most compressed air, hydraulic, and industrial hose assemblies encountered in the Gulf Coast industrial market.

65 years in the lifting and rigging business has given our team a clear picture of where hose restraint failures happen. These slings are made for the conditions that team has seen on jobsites, not just what looks good in a catalog.

Whip Check Sling Inspection

Whip check slings warrant inspection before installation and periodically during service. Conditions indicating closer evaluation include cuts, fraying, abrasion to the ply webbing, broken stitching, deformed or cracked end fittings, and missing or illegible WLL markings. Retire slings showing these conditions per manufacturer guidelines before returning the hose assembly to service.

Frequently Asked Questions

A whip check sling is a hose restraint that loops around a pressurized hose assembly and connects to a fixed anchor point. If the hose coupling fails under pressure, the whip check catches the hose and limits travel, reducing the risk of injury from hose whip. Holloway Houston manufactures these in 1-ply through 4-ply with WLL from 7,200 lbs to 18,000 lbs in 24-inch to 60-inch lengths.
Ply selection generally follows the hose size and pressure rating. 1-ply at 7,200 lbs WLL covers lighter compressed air hose. 4-ply at 18,000 lbs WLL is for large-bore, high-pressure industrial hose. The WLL needed is listed in the hose assembly documentation and worksite safety requirements.
Four lengths: 24 inches, 36 inches, 48 inches, and 60 inches, available in all four ply ratings (1-ply through 4-ply). 16 total variants in stock. Call 1-888-496-4700 for availability.
Compressed air hose whip check requirements appear in OSHA 29 CFR 1926.302 for construction sites (pneumatic tools). Many oilfield, chemical plant, and industrial facility safety programs extend similar requirements to hydraulic and process hose assemblies. Specific requirements for a given installation are in the worksite safety program and equipment manufacturer documentation.
