Ratchet Straps

Ratchet straps are the tie-down of choice when chain isn't the right fit for the load, finished surfaces, vehicle transport, light equipment, bundled goods. Elite Sales polyester ratchet straps are rated per DOT FMCSA 49 CFR Part 393 and available in the widths, lengths, and working load limits that flatbed, enclosed trailer, and cargo van operations run every day.

Elite Sales Ratchet Straps for Cargo Securement

Polyester webbing ratchet straps secure cargo through tension applied by a ratchet handle mechanism. The webbing wraps around or over the load; the ratchet takes up the slack and holds the tension until manually released. The ratchet handle's spring-loaded pawl keeps the tension locked through road vibration and load shift.

DOT FMCSA 49 CFR Part 393 requires that each strap assembly carry a labeled working load limit and edge protection where webbing contacts sharp edges or corners. Straps count toward the aggregate WLL requirement the same way chain assemblies do, and on loads where chain would scratch, dent, or damage the surface, straps are the right call.

Elite Sales ratchet straps are woven from polyester webbing, which holds up in wet conditions better than nylon (polyester does not absorb water and maintains rated WLL when wet, unlike nylon which can lose tensile strength). Common widths are 1 inch, 2 inch, and 4 inch, with lengths from 8 feet to 30 feet depending on the model.

Elite Sales Ratchet Strap Options

1-Inch Ratchet Straps

Narrow-width straps for light cargo, bundled goods, and supplemental tie-downs. Working load limits in the 500 to 833 lb range. Common on cargo vans, box trucks, and enclosed trailers.

2-Inch Ratchet Straps

The standard flatbed tie-down width. Elite Sales 2-inch straps are available in working load limits from 833 lbs to 3,333 lbs in single assembly ratings, covering most general freight and equipment tie-down applications. End fittings include flat hooks, wire hooks, and chain hooks depending on the trailer anchor point.

4-Inch Ratchet Straps

Wide-body straps for heavy equipment, vehicle transport, and loads where load distribution across a wider webbing surface reduces contact pressure on the cargo. Working load limits up to 5,000 lbs or higher depending on the model configuration.

Axle Straps and Wheel Nets

Vehicle transport tie-down accessories for securing axles and wheels on auto transport and equipment hauling trailers. Available in 2-inch and 4-inch configurations matched to the vehicle weight class being secured.

Ratchet Strap Applications

  • Vehicle transport: Car haulers and auto transport trailers use wheel nets and axle straps to secure vehicles without contact on painted body panels.
  • Light equipment and machinery: Skid steers, forklifts, and light machinery on enclosed or flatbed trailers where chain contact would damage the machine.
  • Lumber, pallets, and bundled goods: Straps loop around or over the load on box trucks and flatbeds where chain would damage the product.
  • General freight: Box trucks and cargo vans use 1-inch and 2-inch ratchet straps for mixed freight loads where chain and binders are impractical.
  • Flatbed supplemental tie-down: Additional straps used with chain tie-downs to prevent load shift on finished or sensitive cargo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Working load limit varies by strap width and configuration. Common ratings are 833 lbs for 1-inch straps, 833 to 3,333 lbs for 2-inch straps, and up to 5,000 lbs or higher for 4-inch straps. Every Elite Sales strap is labeled with its WLL per DOT FMCSA 49 CFR Part 393 marking requirements.
Polyester webbing holds its rated tensile strength when wet. Nylon absorbs water and can lose a portion of its tensile strength in wet conditions. For over-the-road cargo securement where straps may be exposed to rain, polyester is the standard choice. Elite Sales ratchet straps use polyester webbing.
Strap length needs to reach from one trailer anchor point, over or around the load, to the opposite anchor point, with enough slack for the ratchet to take up. For flatbed applications, 20-foot and 27-foot straps cover most standard load widths. Cargo van and box truck straps typically run 8 to 15 feet. Holloway Houston can help size the right length for your trailer configuration.
Webbing in contact with sharp edges or corners calls for edge protection, corner protectors or edge guards, to prevent webbing abrasion that reduces tensile strength. DOT FMCSA 49 CFR Part 393 addresses edge protection requirements for tie-down assemblies. Elite Sales stocks edge protection accessories.
Ratchet strap assemblies are reusable as long as the webbing is free of cuts, fraying, excessive wear, discoloration from chemical exposure, or damage to the stitched end fittings. A strap with any of those conditions is retired from service. The ratchet hardware is inspected for proper pawl function and handle operation before each reuse.
