Crosby Shackles

Bolt-type or screw pin, it's the first question on most shackle orders. The answer depends on whether the pin needs to stay put under vibration, side-loading, or sustained cycling. Crosby has been answering that question since 1887, and their G-209/S-209 screw pin and G-2130/S-2130 bolt-type lines remain the standard reference for anchor shackles across the industry.

Holloway Houston is an authorized Crosby distributor stocking shackles from 3/16" through 2" from our Houston warehouse.

About Crosby Shackles

The Crosby Group traces its roots to 1887 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Over 135 years of forging and heat-treating rigging hardware has produced a catalog that most riggers treat as the industry baseline, when someone says "shackle," Crosby G-209 is often the implied default.

Crosby shackles are forged from alloy steel, quenched and tempered, and proof-tested before leaving the factory. Both G-series and S-series shackles are forged alloy steel, quenched and tempered. They carry the same WLL at equivalent body sizes, the difference is pin type and fatigue rating, not capacity. Every shackle body carries the WLL, manufacturer logo, and traceability markings per ASME B30.26-2015 (Rigging Hardware).

The RFID traceability program available on select Crosby hardware lets maintenance teams link a shackle's proof test and inspection history to the physical unit, a feature that matters on long-term rigging assemblies and offshore equipment registers.

Holloway Houston stocks the core Crosby shackle lines in Houston with same-day shipping on standard sizes.

Types of Crosby Shackles

Screw Pin Anchor Shackles (G-209 / S-209)

The G-209 and S-209 screw pin anchor shackles are the workhorse of rigging hardware. The bow body accepts multi-leg sling connections, the wide profile distributes force across sling legs without concentrating load on the pin. The screw pin threads in and out by hand, which makes it fast for rigging setups that change frequently. The G-209 and S-209 run from 1/3 ton through 35 tons across 15 sizes.

Bolt Type Anchor Shackles (G-2130 / S-2130)

On any connection with sustained vibration, turnaround work, offshore platforms, permanent rigging, the G-2130 bolt-type is the standard call. The bolt-nut-cotter assembly keeps the pin from backing out where a screw pin won't stay put. The G-2130 and S-2130 cover 1/3 ton through 55 tons, with the 2-1/2" alloy version reaching 55 tons. Same bow-body profile as the screw pin lines, the difference is in the pin retention, not the body geometry.

Chain Shackles (D-Shackles)

Chain shackles, also called D-shackles or dee shackles, use a narrower, D-shaped bow that's suited to in-line connections on chain and wire rope slings. Where the anchor shackle's wide bow is designed for multi-leg sling eyes, the chain shackle keeps the load centered on the pin for straight-pull applications. Crosby chain shackles are available in both screw pin and bolt-type configurations.

Crosby Shackle Sizes and Working Load Limits

Crosby shackles cover WLL ranges across standard rigging capacity requirements. The G-209 and S-209 screw pin and G-2130 and S-2130 bolt-type lines carry the same WLL at every overlapping size, the pin type does not change capacity.

WLL Range by Series:

  • G-209 / S-209 (screw pin): 1/3 ton to 35 tons (3/16" to 2")
  • G-2130 / S-2130 (bolt type): 1/3 ton to 55 tons (3/16" to 2-1/2")

Materials:

  • G-series: Alloy steel, quenched and tempered
  • S-series: Alloy steel, quenched and tempered - same WLL as G-series at equivalent sizes

Marking:

  • WLL and manufacturer logo forged into the body per ASME B30.26-2015 (Rigging Hardware)
  • Lot number for traceability to proof test certificate
  • RFID capability on select catalog models

Why Crosby for Shackles

Crosby shackles carry over 135 years of manufacturing history in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Global Quality Management System covers raw material sourcing, forging, heat treatment, proof testing, and final inspection - and the lot marking on every shackle ties back to that documentation.

For riggers working offshore, in petrochemical service, or on any job where the rigging hardware needs to perform under documented conditions, the Crosby traceability system means the shackle's history follows the hardware. That matters on equipment registers and third-party inspection programs.

Holloway Houston also offers rigging inspection services. Our qualified inspectors examine shackles, slings, and hardware per ASME B30.26-2015 (Rigging Hardware) and OSHA standards to keep your equipment in service and your crews working.

Crosby Shackle Applications by Industry

  • Offshore and Marine - Permanent and semi-permanent rigging connections on platforms, vessels, and mooring systems where bolt-type retention is the standard specification.
  • Oil and Gas - Turnaround and maintenance rigging in refineries and petrochemical facilities where lot traceability satisfies third-party inspection requirements.
  • Structural Steel Erection - Multi-leg sling connections on beam picks, column erection, and panel lifts where anchor shackle bow geometry distributes sling leg load.
  • General Rigging and Crane Work - Day-rate rigging where the G-209 screw pin is the go-to for fast, frequently changed connections on crane hooks and below-the-hook devices.
  • Mining and Aggregates - Heavy-duty connections on conveyor maintenance, mill lifts, and underground rigging where the Crosby alloy S-series covers higher WLL in smaller body sizes.

Shackle Safety and Awareness

Shackles in load-handling service fall under ASME B30.26-2015 (Rigging Hardware), which covers design factors, marking requirements, and inspection intervals. OSHA 1926.251 addresses rigging hardware on jobsites.

  • Shackles are marked with WLL and manufacturer ID. A shackle without legible markings is not suitable for lifting service.
  • Pre-use visual inspection covers the body for cracks or deformation, the pin for full seating and thread condition, and the bow for wear beyond the manufacturer's wear limit.
  • Screw pin shackles in applications with vibration or load rotation can have the pin back out during service.
  • Side-loading a shackle reduces the effective capacity below the in-line WLL.
  • A shackle that has been shock-loaded warrants removal from service and inspection before further use.

Frequently Asked Questions

The G-209 uses a screw pin that threads in and out by hand - fast for rigging setups that change frequently. The G-2130 uses a bolt, nut, and cotter pin assembly that prevents the pin from backing out under vibration or side-loading. Both carry the same WLL at every overlapping size from 3/16" through 2". The G-2130 extends to 2-1/2" and 55 tons, a size the G-209 line doesn't cover.
Both the G-series and S-series are forged alloy steel, quenched and tempered. They carry the same WLL at equivalent body sizes - the distinction is pin type (screw pin vs. bolt-type) and fatigue rating, not capacity. Both carry WLL markings per ASME B30.26-2015 (Rigging Hardware).
ASME B30.26-2015 (Rigging Hardware) covers inspection requirements for shackles in load-handling service. OSHA 1926.251 references rigging hardware inspection on jobsites.
Holloway Houston stocks Crosby G-209, S-209, G-2130, and S-2130 shackles from 3/16" through 2" in our Houston warehouse with same-day shipping on in-stock sizes. Call 1-888-496-4700 to confirm availability on a specific size or model.
Crosby shackles are widely specified in marine and offshore service. Bolt-type configurations (G-2130/S-2130) are the standard call for permanent rigging points, mooring connections, and applications where vibration could back out a screw pin. Crosby's lot traceability and proof test documentation also satisfy most offshore equipment register requirements.
