Hammerhead HMPE Rope Slings

A Hammerhead Sling is a high-modulus polyethylene (HMPE) rope lifting sling with a color-coded, abrasion-resistant cover. The rope carries the load. The cover protects the load-bearing fibers from abrasion and contamination and serves as the primary means of capacity identification. HMPE gives a high strength-to-weight ratio, so a Hammerhead Sling is lighter to handle than steel rigging of the same rated capacity.

Holloway Houston manufactures Hammerhead Slings in Houston, designed, manufactured and tagged to ASME B30.9 (Slings). The HMPE rope inside the sling is tested to Cordage Institute test methods for fiber ropes. Each model carries its own cover color — purple, HHI Green, yellow, red, blue, and orange — so a sling can be identified across the yard without reading the tag. Every sling ships with a permanently attached ID tag.

Sling Inspection and Retirement

Hammerhead Slings are HMPE rope sling assemblies manufactured and tagged to ASME B30.9. Indicators that a sling warrants removal from service include cuts or tears to the cover, a breached cover exposing the rope beneath, heat discoloration, chemical attack, a missing or illegible ID tag, or any deformation that changes the sling's geometry. Holloway Houston's inspection team can assess condition in the field.
